You are much braver than I am. Can't bring myself to watch that adaptation. I am too satisfied by the 1995 version to desire any other. As a Fanny Price defender I appreciate the connections you made between Anne and Fanny! Adaptors, let us have our quiet, virtuous heroines. Not everyone needs to be sassy.

So well put thanks for outlining so pointedly why this one fell flat. Agreed it had so much potential in so many ways but just soooo missed the mark. They could have had a classic but made throw away fast food instead 😩

I’ll admit I *did* find the Netflix adaptation entertaining but not at all true to the book and, especially, not to Anne. (Though Sir Walter was well cast.) That said, I found that 2007 Anne to be a bit too tortured and overdramatic herself, nearly unable to complete a sentence without choking on her emotions. She was well-loved (by those not related to her) for the reasons you mentioned: her loyalty, her steadiness, her reasonableness. The 2007 Anne didn’t show much of those either. I guess I need to watch the 1995 version and hope to find an Anne I actually like!

What a great analysis, and now I don't have to see this version! I thought the 1995 one was excellent, one of the best Austen adaptations of them all.
