I love this, and it's the only take I want to hear on "Mary, Did You Know." (Which also makes me sob even though I think it should be adapted to "Mary Told Me So.") Babies might be common enough, Mrs. Gibson, but "every little baby is the sweetest and the best," as Mrs. Allan says!

I was pregnant over Xmas with my son, and it was amazing. He was a miracle, and the wonder was even more poignant. I don't think Mary KNEW. She was aware of who He was supposed to be, but didn't know what He was supposed to be. You look at the wedding in Cana, and then when she and his brothers tried to make him come through the crowd and be with them. No mother can ever be prepared to see their son brutally crucified! I appreciate how the gospels reveal Mary's utter humanity and depravity. She had an incredible moment, but it wasn't a unique moment: we're ALL called to be Marys. We're all called to sacrifice everything, no matter what. Putting Mary on a pedestal of "one moment" lets us feel like we can rule our own lives.
